Grain

Rift & Quartered

Rift and quartered sawn wood is made by cutting planks so the growth rings intersect the board face at 30° to 90°. This combines rift sawn’s clean, vertical grain with quarter sawn’s decorative flecking and superior stability, offering both visual appeal and resistance to moisture-related movement.

Rift

Rift sawn wood features a straight, vertical grain with a smooth, uniform look and no flecking. With growth rings at 30° to 60°, it creates a consistent linear pattern ideal for a clean, modern style. Both rift and quarter sawn flooring offer refined appearance and greater dimensional stability than plain sawn, reducing warping and cupping, especially in changing humidity.

Quartered

Quarter sawn wood is named for the way the log is cut into quarters before slicing. This method produces growth rings at a 60–90° angle, resulting in a tight, vertical grain with a clean, elegant look. It often features striking flecking that adds unique character and visual interest.

Plain Sawn

Plain sawn is the most common lumber cut and was a staple in homes built during the early to mid-1900s. It typically featured 2- to 3-inch red oak planks with a distinctive cathedral grain pattern and visible growth rings set at a 0 to 35-degree angle.

Grades

Select & Better

Select and Better is the highest hardwood grade, featuring uniform grain and minimal color variation. Small knots may be allowed but must be stained and subtle. Ideal for formal rooms or when a clean, refined floor look is desired.

#2 Common

No. 2 Common grade hardwood flooring is the most budget-friendly choice. It features numerous visible knots, mineral streaks, and color variations, creating a rustic and casual appearance.

#1 Common

No. 1 Common grade hardwood flooring is the most popular and widely used in the US. It has more visible knots, mineral streaks, and color variations than clear or select grades, giving it a natural, slightly rustic look.
